Travelling in Glasgow in 2019

IMG_6424IMG_6428Other than those Newlands in Bathgate, Edinburgh and Shotts, the majority of my Newlands family were from Glasgow, including the Gorbals and Barony areas. And a significant number were in the Tailoring Trade – often as Merchant Tailorssee Post Office details here.

A summary of locations of their Tailoring establishments is shown below:

  • 1805 – John Newlands Tailor 20 Saltmarket
  • 1806 – John Newlands Tailor – St Andrews Square
  • 1813 – Newlands Tailor – 103, Gallowgate
  • 1821 – John Newlands Merchant Tailor – Saracen’s Lane
  • 1832 – 1833 – John Newlands Senr Merchant Tailor 7 Moore St
  • 1834 – 1835 – John Newlands Senr Merchant Tailor 5 Moore St
  • 1834 – 1835 – John Newlands Jnr Merchant Tailor 486 Gallowgate
  • 1847 – 1848 – Newlands Co, Tailors and Clothiers 70 Brunswick St

We aimed to visit Gorbals and the localities of these Tailoring places during our trip to Scotland in May 2019. A little digging had revealed that most of these places still existed although probably looking a little different 150 to 200 years later.

A map of these localities is shown below – zoom in or out :

It was absolutely pouring on our second day in Glasgow so we headed over to the fabulous Kelvingrove Museum – Gallery with its Guilds display in the main hall including the Tailors Guild

Gorbals – seems so diverse – some redeveloped parts and other older more grimy areas

Barony and St Andrews Square will have to wait for a future visit to Scotland, when hopefully the weather will be better.
